Who can sell on TugaFreela: Portuguese NIF now required

imagem

From now on, anyone who wants to sell services on TugaFreela must confirm their tax connection to Portugal. Here's exactly what changes, for whom, and why.

What doesn't change: hiring is open to everyone

If you're here to hire a professional or post a project, nothing changes at all. Anyone, in any country, can create an account, post what they need and hire — no checks, no documents, no paperwork.

What changes: selling requires a Portuguese tax number

To publish services and receive payments as a freelancer, a valid Portuguese tax number (NIF) is now required. Without a NIF, selling is not possible.

This is not a nationality barrier: you don't have to be Portuguese. You need a genuine tax connection to Portugal — exactly as you would to issue an invoice in the country.

When identity verification is required

  • Portuguese and in Portugal? Nothing else is required. Publish your services as usual.
  • Portuguese but abroad? We'll ask for a document to confirm your identity.
  • Any other nationality? We'll ask for a document, wherever you are.

Accepted documents

One of these is enough, always together with the NIF:

  • Portuguese Citizen Card;
  • Portuguese Residence Permit or Card;
  • NIF certificate issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority;
  • Portuguese passport.

A Portuguese passport is accepted — it proves Portuguese nationality. A passport from another country is not, because it proves who you are but not your connection to Portugal.

Portuguese and living abroad? No problem. Anyone who can prove Portuguese citizenship may work on TugaFreela from anywhere in the world, remotely.

Why we're doing this

For one simple reason: trust.

People hiring on TugaFreela are handing money to someone they don't know. By ensuring there's a professional with verified Portuguese tax identification on the other side, we give clients the confidence of knowing who they're working with — and give serious freelancers a way to stand apart.

It's also a matter of compliance: anyone providing services professionally in Portugal has tax obligations, and the platform must respect them.

Already have services published?

Services already online keep working. When you edit a service, verification will be requested if you haven't completed it yet. We recommend sorting it out calmly, without last-minute rush.

How to get verified

It's quick: log in, go to Identity Verification (KYC), enter your NIF and upload a photo of your document. We check the NIF automatically and review the document. You'll get the answer by email.

Hiring stays open to the world. Selling requires a Portuguese NIF.
